National Theatre São Carlos, Portugal
Based in Lisbon, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is Portugal’s only historic opera house with a permanent resident company dedicated to opera, ballet, and symphonic music. This grand landmark first opened its doors in 1793.
The theatre is home to two of Portugal’s premier professional ensembles: the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra (Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa) and the São Carlos Choir. While the historic main building is currently closed for renovations, the company maintains a busy schedule, bringing its productions to various stages across Lisbon. In 2025, Portuguese composer and conductor Pedro Amaral took over as artistic director, steering the company toward regional outreach. This initiative brings opera and classical music far beyond the capital, reaching audiences who might otherwise never experience the art form. The theatre’s parent organization, OPART, also hosts one of Lisbon’s most anticipated summer highlights: the Millennium open-air festival. Held in the square right outside the theatre, it offers free opera, ballet, and symphonic concerts on warm summer evenings.
The aesthetic of the Portuguese opera company is cleverly modern. While classical works are not necessarily staged in period costumes, the productions remain faithful to the original vision of the composer and librettist. Although National Theatre São Carlos regularly hosts acclaimed European directors and collaborates with top international soloists, critics consistently praise its vital role in spotlighting and nurturing Portugal’s own finest vocal talent.
