Prokofiev. Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor
Experienced and world- renowned young musicians perform serious pieces from the middle of the 20th century. A vivid but little-known fact might help understand Poulenc’s music: he was a passionate visitor of variety shows. His music has some references to and moods from revue music. Prokofiev’s first violin sonata is sombre and introspective; he called one of the important elements ‘wind in the cemetery’. Perhaps in a way, it was foreshadowing – the sonata was played at the funeral of the composer. It was performed by the legendary David Oistrakh, to whom the piece is dedicated.
