The architectural design of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice played an important role in the development of Venetian choral music. As in addition to the principal organ, organs were also located on the balconies above the altar. There was also enough room for choirs of singers and musicians. Thus, each balcony had its own performing ensemble consisting of singers, instrumentalists or both. Both versions of the ensemble are also heard at the concert today.
