John Tavener. „Towards Silence“ for four string quartets and Tibetan singing bowl, and a cappella choral works by Arvo Pärt

This performance invites listeners to explore the various layers of stillness and the passage of time. John Tavener’s monumental „Towards Silence“ unfolds as a meditative experience where the music gradually slows, deepens, and ultimately dissolves into near-absolute quietude. Interspersing these movements, the a cappella pieces by Arvo Pärt introduce contrasting textures and moments of reflection. A profound spiritual dimension unites the output of both composers, with every note meticulously weighed, giving silence and text an equal importance alongside actual sound.

Sir John Tavener, who maintained a deep faith and a lifelong fascination with mysticism, conceived „Towards Silence“ after surviving a severe illness. The music is slow, static, and contemplative, establishing a ritualistic atmosphere within the auditorium that reflects the influences of Orthodox Christianity and Eastern philosophy on his creative path.

The composition comprises ten distinct sections rooted in the Hindu concept of the four states of consciousness. Each segment begins with the strike of a Tibetan bell to mark the transition to a new state. The vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis and the musicians of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra are well acquainted with Tavener’s repertoire, having previously earned recognition for their insightful interpretations of his music.
