Maria Kõrvits. New work based on Fernando Pessoa’s “The Book of Disquiet” (premiere)

Fernando Pessoa’s „The Book of Disquiet“ remains one of the most enigmatic creations of 20th-century literature. Fragmented and elusive like smoke, its prose evokes remarkably precise sensations and startling moments of recognition. It resists being read in a single sitting, yet continues to haunt the mind long after it is set down. Pessoa explores an inner world that feels deeply familiar yet remains fundamentally out of reach. This indefinable quality creates a unique aura, challenging to articulate in words but ideally suited for the boundless expressive possibilities of music to capture that invisible essence.

For about two years, we have shared our fascination and reflections on Pessoa’s masterpiece, which has culminated in a desire to craft an expansive piece for a narrator and ensemble. This project finds its home within the genre of music theatre.

Ludensemble

The core of Ludensemble consists of Estonian musicians dedicated to 20th and 21st-century repertoire. Stepping beyond traditional genre boundaries, the ensemble explores collaborative spaces where contemporary music, visual arts, and theatre intersect.

Ludensemble has demonstrated that contemporary music does not have to be academic or distant; it can be rhythmically driving and rich in colour.
