Introduction

Performers:

Ivo Pogorelich (piano)

In September, the legendary Croatian pianist Ivo Pogorelich will appear at the Estonia Concert Hall with a solo recital, bringing to the stage a unique musical voice that has left a profound mark on the landscape of contemporary classical music through its originality and innovative approach. With a performing career spanning more than four decades, he is esteemed for his compelling interpretations, refined musical sensibility, technical mastery, and uncompromising artistic standards. His concerts are eagerly anticipated by audiences and critics alike, invariably generating lively discussion.

Pogorelich’s programme centres on Bach, Beethoven and Brahms — the “three great Bs” of classical music — whose extensive works unquestionably belong to the golden canon of Western piano repertoire, while remaining strikingly distinct in character. Bach’s English Suites reveal a masterful synthesis of German, Italian and French stylistic elements of the period. Brahms’s deeply personal and subjective intermezzi reflect the composer’s interest in the lullaby. Beethoven’s final piano sonata, meanwhile, probes the expressive limits of the instrument, combining rhythmic vision with formidable technical demands. In addition, the programme includes Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales — eight waltzes inspired by Schubert, in which an apparently light surface conceals a complex and highly organised musical structure.
