Giovanni Gabrieli’s polychoral music, which the Estonian National Male Choir has performed and recorded on several occasions, will be presente in an authentic version, complete with instrumental accompaniment for the vocal parts.
This music, originally created for performances in Venice’s St. Mark’s Basilica, is notable for its unique presentation style. The church’s interior, with its arches, balconies, and chapels, was almost as crucial to the performance as the score itself. Musicians were typically positioned on balconies during services, which gave rise to the general term for Gabrieli’s works: polychoral music. At this concert, the music will also fill the entire space. Instead of loudspeakers, the audience will be surrounded by the organ, natural trombones, and vocals, all placed at various levels and recesses throughout the venue.
