Mendelssohn. Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 49
Rachmaninoff. Piano Trio No. 2 in D minor. Op. 9 (“Elegie”)
The trio, comprised of Estonian top musicians, has been playing together for years, always surprising the audience with diverse concert programmes and performing great composers’ works with respect and passion. Mendelssohn’s Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 4 is the composer’s most popular trio, written in a romantic Schumann style, who honoured Mendelssohn as the 19th-century Mozart. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s monumental Piano Trio No 2 titled “Elegie” is created in 1893 and dedicated to the memory of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. It is one of the most compelling and original chamber music pieces of the romantic era, gripping from the first chord, with the ability to change 45 minutes into one long captivating sigh. The best traditions of European music culture combine here with the term “Russian spirit” in such a suggestive way that calling the trio unforgettable would not be an exaggeration.
