A delicious and inviting French Evening – songs of Edith Piaf and excerpts from “Arc de Triumph” by Remarque leads the audience to Paris during World War II. There is a piece of the Hotel International lobby featured on stage, with sound and light design creating the mood. Singer Rebecca Kontus, accompanied by accordion, piano, and double bass, presents Piaf’s most famous songs, including “L’accordeoniste” and “Non! Je ne regrette rien”. Actor Üllar Saaremäe reads excerpts from Remarque’s novel. At first sight, Piaf’s life in the France occupied by Germans is incomprehensible. The singer is recognized and privileged in the Nazi creme de la creme, she sings at their parties, but also in prison camps. Photographs where she poses with prisoners of war were made into passport photos that helped many people escape. Using the favor of the upper crust Nazis, Piaf rescues her Jewish friends. Occasionally, Piafi’s association with the resistance movement pushes the patience of the Nazis to the limits, thus jeopardizing the lives of both the singer and her companions. Piaf is rescued by music.
