Maksim Štšura, winner of the 7th Estonian Piano Competition (2008), is an exceptionally capable musician and an internationally acknowledged pianist. In addition to his tight performance and recording schedule as a member of the Foyle-Štšura duo, Maksim recently defended his doctoral dissertation at the Royal College of Music in London, and since 2020 has been a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

For his Estonian audience, Maksim will be performing “Ludus Tonalis”, the great piece by Paul Hindemith – the most important German composer of the twentieth century and the main master of the neo-Classical style. Hindemith’s “Ludus tonalis” is the most important reflection on Bach’s ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’ in the music of the twentieth century, next to Shostakovich’s twenty-four preludes and fugues, and demands a special musical intellect and expressive energy from the interpreter.

The first half of the concert will include the folk song-inspired cycle of poetic miniatures by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček entitled “On an Overgrown Path”, and Shostakovich’s catching and dramatic Prelude and Fugue No. 24 in D minor.
