Couperin. “Lessons of darkness” (Leçons de ténèbres)

Ensemble Floridante has become a memorable presence on stage with their bright performances and flexible compositions. The ensemble’s members share their interest  and dedication to music from earlier eras, and also in their shared love of creating meaningful and comprehensive programmes. On this occasion, Floridante will be performing François Couperin’s cycle, “Lessons of Darkness” which traditionally had been played in the week surrounding the Good Friday. It is customary to put out one burning candle after each part of the piece during the performance, until there is total darkness both factually and symbolically.

“Lessons of darkness” by Couperin is one of the most wonderful pieces ever created. It has been captivating audiences for centuries. With or without candles, I am sure that this piece will remain memorable for its audience for many years. – Andres Mustonen
