Performance of Shanghai Opera House“If I love you, beware!” – those lines from Carmen’s famous aria has made her without doubt one of the most famous femmes fatales in opera. Desired by every man, the wild and willful Carmen – femme fatale cannot be restrained by one lover. This fiery romance erupts with passion, jealousy, and revenge. Carmen presented at 2018 Saaremaa Opera Festival is co-production of Shanghai Opera House, Opera Hong Kong and Slovene National Theatre, with Philippe Arlaud as the stage director. Today, one of the top performing groups in China – The Shanghai Opera House (SOH) was established in 1956. Over the past six decades, the SOH has produced array of operas, dance dramas, musicals, choral, and symphonic and dance works. The SOH has developed various and diversified Chinese original repertoire and an extensive repertoire of western classical operas. The company has also built working relationships with overseas counterparts and presented joint productions. The SOH tours extensively in China and Italy, Vatican, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Macau. The lineup of artists that SOH has worked with includes conductors Lorin Maazel, John Nelson, Daniel Oren, tenors Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Doming, José Carreras, etc.
