Introduction

Founded in 2006, Tanini is an eclectic, lyric instrumental trio of three Turkish musicans, each with a successful international career on his own.

Tahir Aydoğdu plays the kanun, which is a plucked zither-type instrument, common in the Near East with slight variations depending on the country. It is a distant cousin of the East European Cimbalom. It is a primarily melody-instrument, secondarily playing chords and arpeggios, and quite rarely in modern practice such as in Tanini, occasionally providing counter-melodies.

Bilgin Canaz plays the ney, which is an ancient cane-flute going back to the Sumerians. It has changed very little over the ages, yet it is capable of a stunningly wide array of technical possibilities in the hands of a modern and versatile player such as Mr. Canaz. It is often referred to as a sufi instrument, yet that is only one of many facets of it anymore, especially in the case of Tanini.

Burçin Büke plays the piano, providing harmony and polyphony to the ensemble, also serving as a bass and rhythm instrument. Still, on occasion, the piano can be heard playing melodies in this band, in a very Turkish ornamental style, imitating the traditional instruments.

Tanini has a mission: to create bridges between cultures of the East and West, promoting world-wide peace and friendship. They have a very carefully picked repertoire, consisting of western music with Turkish elements, and Turkish music with Western elements, fused through sensitive considerations, aiming towards utmost homogeneity and beauty.

As a band, together they have performed in Turkey, Italy, Germany, USA, South Korea, Canada, Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania, Turkmenistan, Spain, Malta, Poland, England, Scotland, Bosna-Herzegovina, Taiwan, Malaysia, Cyprus and Jordan etc. They’ve recorded two albums: Dokunuşlar (Touches) and Dokunuşlar II (Touches II) which are available on the internet. This excludes the much greater number of countries/venues and albums the members have.
