Introduction

Every time Olivier Messiaen’s quartet is performed, time stops.

Tõnu Kalm joins Jorma Toots, Camillo Cabassi and Vitalij Regensperger to present an extraordinary piece in the chamber hall of Jõhvi Concert Hall.
Time stopped for the first time on January 15, 1941 in the Görlitz prison camp. With composing Messiaen kept his spirit fresh. The choice of instruments was determined by the fact that among the fellow prisoners there were three musicians: a violinist and a clarinetist who had been able to keep their instruments with them; and a cellist, for whom the prison guards provided a cello. The piano part Messiaen wrote for himself, although there was no piano available in the prison camp. After the composition was completed, a piano was found, although it was out of tune and had several keys stuck.
Then, on one cold winter evening, on an improvised stage, a concert took place, which was attended by 400 officers and fellow prisoners. Later, Messiaen has recalled that he has never been listened with such devotion and understanding.

We look forward to see you at the concert! Before performing the piece, we will introduce it in more detail. Afterwards, we will let the music speak for itself.
