Founded in Lugano in 1935 as the Orchestra della Radio della Svizzera italiana, it played a major role in the region’s musical development. Over the years it was directed by musical figures such as Igor Stravinsky, Leopold Stokowski, Marc Andreae, Alain Lombard, Mikhail Pletnev, Lorin Maazel, Vladimir Ashkenazy and others.

Since 2015, the principal Conductor of the orchestra is Markus Poschner.

Under Poschner the orchestra has thrilled both audiences and critics with performances and recordings. In January 2018 the OSI-Poschner partnership was recognised at the international level when the boxed set Rereading Brahms (Sony Classical 2016) was one of the winners at the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2018.
