Cherubini. Requiem

Andres Mustonen has created a programme that is characteristic of his creative handwriting, featuring two masterpieces from a different era and style: the Requiem of the Italian composer Luigi Cherubini, followed by Krzysztof Penderecki’s Piano Concerto “Resurrection” as a spiritual bridge.

In the first half of his life, Cherubini dedicated himself to opera and laid the foundation for a French comic and romantic opera. In the latter half of his life, he devoted himself to sacral music, which was highly valued by his contemporaries. It is a deeply intimate composition with a romantic scale and a wide color palette.

Krzysztof Penderecki’s piano concerto “Resurrection” was created in memory of those killed in the New York terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. This fact is not just a note in the score; it is deeply perceptible to the listener through music. It is the composer’s most postmodern and neo-romantic composition, which carries deeply meaningful connections. This piano concerto with moving melodies has also been considered as a composer’s reference to what kind of music Rachmaninoff could have written a hundred years later.

The Estonian National Male Choir has performed the Requiem by Cherubini on several occasions and also recorded it with the ENSO in 2002 under the baton of Andres Mustonen. Now the performers stand before us – stronger and more meaningful than ever.
