Introduction

Performers:

Gurdjieff Ensemble (Armenia)
Artistic Director Levon Eskenian

Programme:
Armenian folk music, Gurdjieff, Komitas

Gurdijeff Ensemble was founded by Levon Eskenian. The audience will hear Gurdijeff/Hartmann along with religious and secular Armenian music on authentic national instruments. They will also hear the works of Komitas Vardapet, a legendary Armenian composer, folk music researcher and collector, arranger, singer, and priest.

The ensemble became internationally renowned after they released an album under ECM with music by Gurdijeff, receiving a widely recognised Edison Award in 2012. The ensemble owns an impressive collection of Armenian folk instruments, and the collection is constantly supplemented. Levon Eskenian was born in Lebanon, studied in Armenia in the Komitas State Conservatory, and in France, Italy, and England, and is performing both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, playing a variety of music from Baroque to modern. He is also organising festivals, master’s classes, giving lectures, and is one of the leading figures of the Armenian musical scene.

The concert is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Komitas.
