The opera was born in Italy. Since the period of baroque, the Italian opera has dominated the whole of Europe. From Madrid and London to St. Petersburg – Italian composers and musicians, and especially singers, were introduced. The superstars of the time, prima donnas and castrates, were treated as today’s pop idols. The vocalists travelled from country to country, from court to court, from one opera house to another, and enjoyed the favour and rich rewards from the rulers of the era.
